How do I put gussets in a dress?
I need to help alter a dress which is about 6.5 inches too small around the chest. It is an old bridesmaid dress, with a basque waist, and zipper back. It is taffeta. It is for a high school musical, so it doesn't have to be a flawless alteration (believe me, it won't be NEAR flawless). I understand how the gussets work, but am confused how to reattach the bodice to the dress, with the zipper still in place. Any help is appreciated! I need to do this tonight!

If the dress fits in the waist, what I would do is make wedge shaped gussets to insert at the seams. If the dress is constructed with princess seams, it's easier to insert, but you could do the same with side seams. If you make wedge shape pieces of fabric, rip out the seams, sew the wedges in and taper them to the waist, you won't have to worry about the zipper at all. It's like making darts in a garment, you're just doing it after the fact instead of during construction. If the gussets are going to be at the side seams, it will be under the arms that might give you a bit of trouble, depending on the sleeve construction. Hopefully, the wearer won't have to raise their arms a lot during the musical - if that is an issue, doing almost a diamond shape gusset might be the best approach.
I know it's hard to read instructions like this since dress making is a visual thing, but hopefully, this will help.
